Trentham kept the ball alive as much as possible, and were rewarded with tries from Mark Riley (3), Andy Hodgson (3), Charlie Atkin, Trevor Beech, Lee Fletcher, Mark Griffiths (2) and Oliver Slater. Mark Riley added 6 conversions, and Andy Hodgson added 2.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team finished off a disappointing league season with a thrilling comeback to draw 22-22 with Ashton-on-Mersey on Saturday. Trentham began well playing against a very strong wind, and played most of the attacking rugby, driving into the Ashton 22. Ashton took the lead though when they kicked a long range penalty after 15 minutes. Trentham continued to dominate, especially in the line outs, and they were again on the attack when Ashton seized on a loose ball and broke almost the length of the field to score a converted try. Trentham were rocked by this break against the run of play, and Ashton put Trentham under pressure in the last 10 minutes of the half, managing a second converted try to lead 17-0 at half time. Trentham began well again, and within 5 minutes, their superior pack had earned a try through Matt Standley. The pack put Ashton under immense pressure, and when the ball was released, they secured possession at the breakdown, before Matt Standley drove over. The conversion was missed. Trentham then conceded an unconverted try after Ashton were given the benefit of a dubious forward pass, but Trentham responded. Phil Millington reduced the deficit with a try after he broke from a scrum 10 metres out, and Simon Rowley made no mistake with the conversion. Trentham now had Ashton in trouble, and Simon Rowley kicked a penalty to reduce the deficit to a converted try with 10 minutes to go. Trentham were guilty of allowing the pressure get to them, and conceded a few penalties as they strove to win the possession that would give them the try they deserved. With the game in injury time, Ashton failed to find touch with a kick, the ball was moved across the field, and Ashton were penalised for killing the ball. Simon Rowley's quick tap penalty and clever inside pass put Matt Standley away, and he fed captain Mark Griffiths, who beat the defence to score under the posts. Simon Rowley's conversion secured the draw, as the whistle blew for full time. Trentham 2nd team were beaten away by a strong Stoke B side 21-37. Playing against the wind in the first half, Trentham were put under pressure, and only had Steve Dono's try as a reward for their hard work. The second half was different, as Trentham played all the rugby, but the gap was too big, despite scores from Carl Baker and the excellent Nick Wiggins, who added 3 conversions.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team beat Burton 2nds 43-5 on Saturday. Trentham began well, and took the lead with a try from Matt Standley after 10 minutes, when the open side flanker picked up a loose ball on the Burton 22 and broke through a gap to score under the posts. Simon Rowley added the conversion, before Burton replied with a blindside break that put the winger over in the corner. Trentham responded by playing some good rugby, with backs and forwards combining, and when they won quick ball, Nick Wide was able to hold the cover and put JP Allen over for a second converted try. Trentham were playing with a freedom that they had missed during the league season, and Alex Davies was next to score after intense pressure on the Burton line. Phil Millington added a fourth try before the break with a typical sniping run to give Trentham a 24-5 half time lead. Trentham continued in the second half as they had in the first, and JP Allen rounded off a superb move after Simon Rowley's outrageous dummy. Rowley added the conversion, before his break lead to a hat trick try for Allen in the corner. Finlay Burke rounded the scoring off, as he supported Oliver Slater, who had caught a clearance kick, rounded his man and was stopped by a last ditch tackle just short of the line. Rowley's conversion completed the scoring. Trentham 2nd team were beaten away by Cannock 2nds 17-31. The game turned during the second half, when Trentham lost a prop, and Cannock were able to dominate the set piece. Trentham could have won the game, but were guilty of dropping try scoring passes. Their tries were scored by Steve Cartlidge (2), and Nick Wiggins, who added a conversion. The Vets were beaten away by Veseyans 0-38.

Trentham Rugby Club A team were beaten away by a strong Uttoxeter 1st team 0-47. Trentham had a mixed side, which was weakened by the loss of prop Brian Parker after 5 minutes, leaving them with a man disadvantage. Trentham only trailed 17-0 at half time, but the extra man took its toll in the second half, as Uttoxeter ran out comfortable winners. Trentham B team had an excellent win against Uttoxeter 2nds 29-20. The Vets were beaten away by Whittington, who had 5 first team players available, 5-22. Trentham's try was scored by Mark Hall.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team were beaten away by Moore comprehensively 17-71 on Saturday in the league. Trentham had to win to stand a chance of avoiding relegation, but got off to a disastrous start. Receiving the kick off, they secured possession, but the clearance kick went dead, giving Moore a scrum back in the Trentham 22 from which they scored a try. Trentham were rocked by 2 further tries as Moore exposed some slack defensive play. Trentham began to rally midway through the half, and when Simon Rowley made an incisive break from his own 22. He beat several men before releasing Nick Wide to score the try. Trentham now had their best period of the match, and they camped on the Moore line, but were met by good defence, albeit on the edge of legality as Moore conceded a string of penalties. However, the turning point of the match came when Moore intercepted a pass a metre from their own line, as Trentham looked to capitalise on an overlap, and they broke the length of the field to score. Moore also managed another breakaway try to lead 27-5 at half time. An early Moore score deflated Trentham, and Moore began to run in tries at will, exposing a flagging Trentham defence. However, Trentham at least gained a bit of pride as they won the last 10 minutes 2 tries to nil, with their backs showing the sort of form that they could produce with good pssession. JP Allen scored the first after a miss pass and loop gave the extra man, and Nick Wide's timed pass drew the cover and put Allen over in the corner. The next try was scored by captain Mark Griffiths, who dummied and crashed over following a quickly taken tapped penalty. Trentham 2nd team were depleted by late cry offs and went away to Leek with 11 men. Leek lent Trentham 2 players, and Trentham played superbly well to hold a strong Leek side for 20 minutes, before losing 5-52. Greg Mawby scored Trentham's try, as Leek's numerical advantage told. Trentham 3rds were heavily beaten by Cannock 2nds, but the Vets beat Whittington 2nds 43-5 to celebrate the end of Tom Inch's Trentham career. Trentham scored tries through their evergreen captain Graham Atkin, Tom Inch, Steve Trenner, Mark Riley, Andy Hodgson, Mark Hall and Oliver Slater Nick Ramsdale and Mark Riley converted 2 tries each.

Runcorn arrived at New Inn Lane with 14 men and took charge from the kick-off using their advantage of superior size in the pack but were thwarted by a determined Trentham defence. The game at times resembled a battlefield rather than a game of rugby with both sides showing an unwillingness to capitulate. The home team took the lead via Finley Burke who received the ball well into the visitors 22 and scored despite close attention from the opposition, the conversion was narrowly missed by Alex Davis. Runcorn replied with a converted try shortly after the restart which was a result of some determined running by the visitors and missed tackles by Trentham. The home team soon regained the lead with a try from Oliver Slater who scored after a phase of inter-passing that left the visitors flat footed; the conversion was again narrowly missed. Runcorn retook the lead with a try identical in execution to their first but this time was unconverted. The whistle ended a first half seeing the visitors lead 12-10; a half that had been fiercely contested by both sides during 40 minutes that on more than one occasion could have erupted. Whilst trailing by 2 points Trentham had controlled the set pieces, in particular the lineout. The second half started as the first had ended with the exchanges becoming even more bad-tempered. Trentham regained the lead 15-12 with Mat Standley scoring from a 5meter scrum, the conversion again wayward. With the game getting more volatile it was only a matter of time before tempers snapped and the referee had no chose but to send off a Runcorn player for violent conduct, thus reducing them to 13 men. Ben Bicknell scored a solo try, breaking passed two defenders to touch down under the posts; the conversion was completed by Alex Davis to give Trentham a 22-12 advantage. The visitors never say die attitude saw them pressing forward despite their lack of numbers and a last ditched textbook tackle by Alex Davis stopped what would have been a certain try. However the visitors did eventually score, touching down in the corner after yet another solo run. The try was unconverted leaving the score 22-17 with 10 minutes of the game left. Trentham knowing that any mistake would deny them a deserved victory pressed forward and were rewarded with a penalty in the opposition 22. The ball was worked quickly through the backs to the wing leaving Alex Davis the easiest try of the day. As the ball missed the posts for the conversion the referee blew for fulltime concluding 80 minutes that at times looked nothing like a game of rugby. Trentham had won 27-17 and had fought hard for every point, and in the end were rewarded for their determination to win by playing rugby.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team were beaten at home 10-29 by a strong Bowden team on Saturday in the league. Trentham began well, and despite playing up the slope and into the wind, were the better side for the first 20 minutes, with the forwards imposing themselves on the set pieces and in the loose play. Trentham deservedly took the lead midway through the half when Phil Millington's delayed pass allowed Simon Rowley to lacerate the Bowden defence and score the try. Bowden hit back, and after a period of sustained pressure, during which Trentham defended superbly, Bowden were awarded a penalty, from which they managed to crash over for a converted try. Bowden continued to press Trentham, and they extended their lead with a second converted try just before half time. Trentham began the second half well, and with man of the match Mark Millington leading from the front, Trentham stretched Bowden on both flanks, before excellent inter play between the forwards and backs allowed JP Allen to dive over in the corner. Again the conversion was missed, but Trentham had the momentum. Bowden began to fight back, and they managed to keep the ball alive well, which enabled them to outstrip the Trentham defence and extend their lead. Trentham continued to battle, but were guilty of not using the elements as well as they should have, and Bowden upped the intensity of their defence. Bowden managed to seal the win with 2 late tries, after Trentham were caught chasing the game. Trentham 2nd team's game against Wolverhampton 3rd team was cancelled as Wolverhampton struggled to get a side, but a combined Vets/3rd team beat St. Leonards 38-7. Tries were scored by Nick Wiggins (2), Andy Hodgson (2), Tony Gee and Mick Thompson, who allegedly beat 4 men on a 2 metre dash to the line. Mark Riley added 4 conversions.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team were without a game on Saturday. Trentham 2nd team were defeated away by a strong Tamworth side 0-23. Trentham were hit by late withdrawals, and only had 14 men, and Tamworth refused to lend them one of their subs. Trentham battled superbly, but the extra man took its toll. The Vets were beaten by St. Leonards 8-16 in a very entertaining and close fought game. Trentham's try was scored by Mark Hall, with Andy Hodgson adding a penalty.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team lost away to St. Edward's OB controversially on Saturday 17-19 in the league. Trentham started with the wind, and soon gained control in the scrums and lineouts, even without the unavailable John Hallam. This allowed Trentham to play in the St. Edward's half, but it was St. Edward's who opened the scoring with a converted try midway through the half following a counter-attack. Trentham were helped by a sin-binning to one of the St. Edward's players, and they immediately restored parity. From a St. Edward's scrum on their line, Trentham drove over the line, and Matt Standley was first to react and dive on the loose ball. Simon Rowley's conversion levelled the scores. From the re-start, the ball was kicked deep, and when St. Edward's missed a penalty attempt, Simon Rowley took a quick 22 drop-out, and collected the ball himself, before setting off on a mazy run deep into St. Edward's 22. The ball was re-cycled, and Phil Millington dropped a goal to give Trentham the lead. Trentham then scored the try of the match. Again, they played deep into the St. Edward's half, and when they won clean line out ball, Phil Millington's delayed pass allowed Mark Griffiths to slice through the defence and score by the posts for Simon Rowley to convert. Trentham had a 17-7 lead, and for the opening 20 minutes of the second half they dominated possession, despite the sin-binning of Richard Chell. The game turned though when St. Edward's attacked, and as the options ran out, a hopeful chip through bounced awkwardly, and St Edward's touched down. St. Edward's began to press, and despite stern defence, Trentham were beaten 5 minutes from the end when the ball squirted out of a scrum, and St. Edward's scored their third try. The conversion was given, despite the ball passing over the outside of the post, to deny Trentham a deserved share of the points. Trentham 2nd team were heavily depleted, but put together one of their best performances of the season to beat Uttoxeter 2nd team 19-17. Having gone 0-10 down due to 2 tries, Chris Oldacre gave Trentham hope when he scored and Ben Grange converted. Richard Sharp, standing in as captain, then scored to give Trentham the lead, before Uttoxeter scored their third try to take a 12-17 lead. With time running out, Greg Mawby set off on a run and beat 4 men before scoring the try. Ben Grange's conversion was the last kick of the game. The 3rd team lost to Stafford 4ths 7-20 and the Vets were beaten by Burton Vets.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team were beaten away at Hoylake 5-41 in the league on Saturday. Trentham were late arriving due to traffic problems on the M6, and were caught cold in the first 20 minutes as Hoylake ran in 4 tries. With the game almost out of reach, Trentham began to rally, and their forwards began to pressurise the Hoylake pack, especially in the scrums. Hoylake were put under intense pressure on their line, but their defence was superb, and Trentham came away with nothing to show for their efforts. Hoylake then extended their lead when they crashed over from a set piece close to the Trentham line to lead 27-0 at half time. Trentham began the second half in the ascendancy, and were camped in the Hoylake 22 for the first 10 minutes, but again they met resolute defence. Hoylake always looked dangerous when they got the chance to move the ball wide, and they stretched their lead with a converted try. Trentham continued to battle, and again had Hoylake on the ropes, and they were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty try as Hoylake continually infringed at the side of rucks and mauls on their line, but again Trentham were thwarted. Hoylake added another converted try, before Trentham got their consolation score in the last 5 minutes. The forwards won clean line out possession after a penalty, and drove towards the line, before the ball was moved wide quickly, where Alex Davies outstripped the defence to score in the corner. Trentham 2nd team beat Lichfield 3rd 17-11 at home in the merit table. They scored tries through Steve Cartlidge, Phil Day and man of the match Barry Shaugnessey, with Ben Grange adding a conversion. The victory was built around a solid platform from the forwards and some exciting play from the three-quarters. Trentham Vets lost to Whittington 2nd team 17-26 with a weakened team. They scored tries through Matt Guest, Andy Smith and Alan Challinor, who also added a conversion

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team were beaten at home by Anselmians 8-30 in the league on Saturday. Trentham were under pressure in the first 20 minutes and went behind to a penalty. Having withstood the early pressure, Trentham then conceded a converted try after a missed tackle in midfield. Trentham began to gain control of the set pieces, and their scrummage was very dominant, but Anselmians managed to clear their lines with some good tactical kicking. When Trentham tried to run the ball out of defence, Ben Bicknell was hit with a big tackle, and Anselmians recycled the ball to score a second converted try. Trentham continued to rally, and following a series of excellent drives by the forwards, Steve Cartlidge broke clear, and when he was stopped, the ball was swiftly moved for Ben Bicknell to touch down. Trentham began the second half with some concerted pressure, but they couldn't break down the Anselmians defence, and had to settle for a penalty from Phil Millington. Anselmians continued to press when they had the opportunity, and a further defensive lapse allowed a third converted try, before 2 penalties sealed Anselmians win. Trentham 2nd team lost away to Longton 3rds 5-48. Trentham were disrupted by late unavailabilities, and came up against a strong Longton team. Trentham went behind early on, and struggled to secure possession throughout the game. Trentham lost the impressive Chris Taylor at half time with a knee injury, and despite the efforts of man of the match Martin Almond, continued to leak tries. Trentham's only consolation was a try in the last minute, when Richard Sharp's quick tapped penalty allowed Nick Wide to scythe through the Longton defence and draw the cover before putting Greg Mawby over. Trentham Vets beat Leek 3rd team 24-10 after a dominant performance from their forwards. They scored tries through Jeff Bailey, Pete Cartwright, Andy Wright and Alan Challinor, who also added 2 conversions.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team beat Sandbach away 26-20 in the league on Saturday. Trentham withstood early Sandbach pressure in the first 20 minutes, and were trailing to a penalty, when the forwards began to gain control. After good tactical kicking had put Trentham deep into the Sandbach half, a catch and drive from a line out saw Lee Fletcher score Trentham's first try. Simon Rowley added the conversion to give Trentham a 7-3 half time lead. Sandbach again put Trentham under pressure in the early part of the second half, without managing to score, before Trentham drove into Sandbach territory. Following more impressive play by the forwards, Richard Chell was able to crash over from a rolling maul to give Trentham a 12-3 lead. Sandbach responded when they exploited some hesitancy in the Trentham midfield to score a converted try, but Trentham soon resumed control. The forwards again exposed Sandbach, and when the ball was released, Simon Rowley's pass put Craig Morton over, with Rowley adding the conversion to extend Trentham's lead to 19-10. Trentham continued to dominate, and Lee Fletcher scored his second try from more good play by the forwards, with Rowley again converting to extend Trentham's lead to 26-10, before Sandbach fought back with good spirit in the last 15 minutes to claim a converted try and a penalty. Trentham 2nd team lost away to Stafford 3rds in an even game. Trentham took the lead midway through the first half with a penalty from Nick Wide. Both sides had chances to score tries, but met with some solid defence. Stafford took the lead with an unconverted try early in the second half, before Trentham responded when Barry Shaugnessey picked up the ball from a scrum on the Stafford 22, and beat 3 men before diving over. Stafford re-took the lead with a converted try after a debatable forward pass, and extended that lead when they scored a third try straight from the restart after some weak tackling. Trentham had a try from Carl Baker ruled out for crossing, and a Barry Shaugnessey try refused as the referee wasn't sure the ball had been grounded, despite Stafford players saying what a good try it was. Stafford wrapped up the game 10 minutes from the end with a converted try, before Trentham earned a consolation after Carl Baker crashed over. Trentham Vets drew 0-0 with Sandbach Vets.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team went out of the Staffs Intermediate Cup on Sunday after a 12-12 draw with Uttoxeter. Trentham went behind early on to a converted try, but responded well, scoring a good try through JP Allen after good work by the backs. Trentham were using the wind on a quagmire of a pitch, which made open rugby very difficult, to gain ground and play in the Uttoxeter half, and from a good territorial position, Trentham took the lead when Simon Rowley stepped inside his man and ran in to score a try which he converted himself. Uttoxeter refused to give in, and they in turn used the elements in the second half to put Trentham under pressure. After resolute defence, a penalty allowed Uttoxeter to get into the Trentham 22, and after the pack had held up the Uttoxeter drive, the ball was moved blind for the equalising score. Both sides struggled afterwards, as the heavy conditions sapped the strength of the players and hindered free flowing rugby, and extra time proved to be a stale mate, so Uttoxeter went through as the away side. Trentham 2nd team beat Newcastle 2nds away 36-7. The game began at a frenetic pace, but Trentham, playing with the wind, began to take control of the set pieces and loose contests. Ben Bicknell opened the scoring with a try after he broke through some weak Newcastle tackling, before Adam Slater rounded off a superb move, where the forwards won quick ball, before it was moved out wide, and Slater crashed over. Laurence Dinelow added a third try before the break, after collecting a loose ball and bursting through the Newcastle defence. Nick Wide added the conversion to give Trentham a 17-0 half time lead. Trentham didn't let up in the second half, and Ben Bicknell scored his second try after the forwards had driven close to Newcastle's line, and again the ball was moved quickly along the backs. Matt Beetlestone scored the next, after more good inter-passing between backs and forwards opened Newcastle up, and Adam Slater converted. Newcastle were awarded a controversial penalty try, after it looked like they had deliberately knocked the ball forward, but Trentham responded by attacking again, and when a catch and drive line out was stopped a metre short, Richard Sharp dived over. Nick Wide added the conversion. Trentham 3rd team lost to Newcastle 3rds 19-30. Steve Cartlidge scored a hat-trick of tries, with Nick Wiggins adding 2 conversions. Trentham Vets lost to St. Leonards Vets 5-15, with their try scored by Jez Loughran.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team were beaten 11-17 at home by Crewe and Nantwich in the league on Saturday. Trentham put in one of their best performances of the season, but suffered with the concession of another early try, which caused them to play catch up rugby again. Having gone behind to a converted try inside the first five minutes, Trentham then took control of the game, dominating the set pieces, and 2 Simon Rowley penalties reduced the deficit to 6-7 at half time. However, Trentham again conceded a try in the opening phases of the second half, and despite Richard Chell scoring from an excellent rolling maul midway through the second half, a third try from Crewe proved decisive. Trentham can take a lot of credit in their performance, and proved that there is not a vast difference between second in the table and bottom. Trentham 2nd team lost away at Crewe and Nantwich 10-12 in a game that they should have won. Playing against the wind, Trentham more than held their own against a strong Crewe side, and after a fairly even opening, Trentham began to take control of the set pieces. Trentham were unlucky not to take the lead when Laurence Dinelow only had to run in unopposed, but the pass was adjudged to be forward. They did take the lead 5 minutes before half time, when Barry Shaugnessey made an excellent break, supported by the rest of the pack, and when the ball was released in the Crewe 22, quick handling sent Carl Baker over. Nick Wide added the conversion to put Trentham 7-0 ahead at half time. Trentham started brightly, but began to lose concentration as Crewe disrupted the game with a series of brawls, and they levelled the scores with a converted try, before taking the lead with their second try. Trentham regained their concentration, and Nick Wide kicked a penalty to reduce the arrears, as Trentham threw everything into the final 15 minutes. However, Trentham were guilty of rushing the final pass, or conceding penalties, and Crewe held on. Trentham Vets lost to Linley 2nds 5-36.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team were beaten 10-11 at home by Dukinfield in the league on Saturday. Trentham were able to field their strongest side of the season for the first time, and dominated the game for 60 minutes, before a lack of concentration and some bizarre refereeing decisions conspired against them. Trentham withstood some early Dukinfield pressure, and began to exert themselves in the set pieces and at the breakdowns. Following some good work, Trentham won a penalty and kicked to the Dukinfield 22. The line out was won by Richard Chell, and the forwards, led superbly by Neil Phillips drove 20 metres to the line, where quick ball was released for the backs and moved along the line for Alex Davies to score his first try for the first team in the corner. Trentham were playing some good controlled rugby, but Dukinfield were never to be ignored. Dukinfield reduced the arrears with a penalty, before Trentham again exploited their extra pace out wide. Alex Davies got the ball on the blind side, and when his chip over was lost by the Dukinfield defence, Matt Standly, making his debut for the first team, dived to score the try. Simon Rowley's attempted conversion came back off the post to leave Trentham 10-3 ahead at half time. Trentham began the second half where they left off, and they were controlling the match, although finding it difficult to break down the Dukinfield defence. They had chances to exploit their pace on the wings, but failed to get the ball out wide. Mid way through the second half, Trentham managed to keep a Dukinfield clearance in play when they should have let it run out, and Dukinfield managed to counter-attack. Steve Cartlidge showed his pace to get back and eradicate the danger, but Dukinfield were in Trentham's 22 for the first time in the second half, and from this passage of play, they scored an unconverted try. Dukinfield were now back in the game, and Trentham were put under pressure by conceding penalties, although some were harshly awarded, and Dukinfield kicked a penalty to take the lead, having missed 2 easier chances. Trentham came back at Dukinfield in the last 10 minutes, and camped in the visitors 22, but Dukinfield managed to hold out. Trentham 2nd team's match away to Congleton was called off due to a frozen pitch, but the 3rd team lost 12-17 to Congleton, with Nick Wiggins among the Trentham scorers. Trentham Vets match against Leek 3rds was also a victim of the weather.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team were beaten 5-12 away at Ellesmere Port in the league on Saturday. Trentham again conceded an early try, when Ellesmere Port won quick second phase ball and exploited a gap on the blindside to score in the corner. Trentham, without the unavailable John Hallam, were under pressure in the scrums, and mid way through the half Ellesmere were awarded a penalty try, when the referee decide the ball was picked out of the back of an Ellesmere scrum. The try was converted to leave Trentham 12-0 down. Trentham had passages of play in the first half when they stretched their hosts, but either the last pass was poor, or the bounce of the ball seemed to evade Trentham. This was definitely the case when sharp play by Ben Bicknell broke up a dangerous Ellesmere attack, but as Bicknell chased the ball, the bounce eluded him. In the second half, Trentham began to ruck with more intent, and the lineouts were excellent as usual, with Richard Chell and Neil Phillips winning all of their own ball and a fair amount of Ellesmere's. Craig Morton began running at Ellesmere, and he was unlucky not to score when a quick lineout was taken, and Trentham caught Ellesmere off guard, but Morton was stopped just short of the line. Trentham were now camped in the Ellesmere 22, and after a period of sustained pressure, Phil Millington crashed over from a quick penalty. However, despite all the pressure in the final moments, Trentham couldn't get the equalising score. Trentham were grateful for the sponsorship of the White Lion public house at Barthomley. Trentham 2nd team beat Stoke 3rds away 27-7. They scored 5 tries through Barry Shaugnessey (2), JP Allen, Adam Slater and Laurence Dinelow, with Matt Standly adding a conversion. Trentham Vets beat Hanford 1st team 12-10, with Alan Challinor scoring both tries, and Mark Riley adding the conversion.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team beat Moore at home 26-19 on Saturday in the league. Trentham played with the wind in the first half, and they were behind after 5 minutes when Moore scored a converted try. Trentham began to play with some pattern, and when Moore tried to counter-attack, Lee Fletcher put in a big tackle on the full back, which allowed Trentham to counter. The ball was moved through numerous hands, before Craig Morton threw an outrageous dummy to score. Phil Millington tied the scores with the conversion. Trentham were stretching their opponents with a good blend of forward drives and backs moves, and from a period of concerted pressure on the Moore line, Neil Phillips crashed over to give Trentham the lead, with Millington again converting. Moore were not to be outdone, and they made the most of an overlap to level with a converted try. Trentham then played their best passage of rugby in the game. Laurence Dinelow was unlucky not to score, when he was caught by a last ditch tackle. The pressure had to pay, as Trentham refused to kick for goal, and ran penalties, and it was after Trentham won a scrum on the Moore 22, that Phil Millington raced through a gap to score under the posts before adding the conversion to give Trentham a 21-14 half time lead. Moore came back into the game in the second half, and Trentham found it difficult to get out of their half, but the defence remained strong, and despite all the pressure, Moore never really looked like breaching the line, until they created an overlap with 10 minutes to go, and scored an unconverted try. Trentham showed excellent resilience to pick their game up and they drove deep into the Moore 22. When Moore made a mess of their own line out, Neil Phillips pounced on the loose ball to score his second try and restore Trentham's advantage. Trentham played out the last 5 minutes in the Moore half, and gained reward for their best performance of the season. Trentham 2nd team drew with Stafford 3rds 12-12 in the Merit Table, with Steve Cartlidge scoring both tries. Matt Standly added the conversion, but Stafford scored late on to gain a draw. Trentham Vets beat Stafford 4ths away 12-8 with Jeff Bailey scoring both tries and a conversion.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team were beaten away at Ashton-on-Mersey 7-31 on Saturday in the league. Trentham had all sorts of problems before the game began, including 4 late cry offs and their strip arriving late for the game. As Trentham had no time for a warm up, they were caught cold in the first 5 minutes when Ashton scored an unconverted try. Trentham were struggling to cope with the pace of the Ashton attacks, and they were struggling with their re-shuffled team to win and retain possession. Ashton scored a converted try before Trentham began to rally, and when Trentham moved the ball wide, they stretched the Ashton defence. Having driven deep into the Ashton half, the Ashton winger counter attacked, and Ashton stretched their lead with a third try, converted before a late try gave Ashton a 24-0 half time lead. Trentham responded in the second half as they came more into the game, and they edged the second half, but either the final pass went astray, or the cover defence managed to hold out. Trentham reduced the arrears when Carl Baker scored a try, converted by Phil Millington, after the forwards had driven deep into the Ashton 22, and the ball was moved along the blind side for Baker to score. Trentham were posing problems for Ashton, but against the run of play, Ashton scored a final converted try to seal the win. Trentham 2nd team did not play, and Trentham 3rd team lost to Market Drayton 0-19. The Vets beat Burton 15-7 with tries from Alan Challinor, Mark Riley and Andy Wright. The platform was laid by a solid forward performance in heavy conditions.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team were beaten away at Runcorn 5-22. Trentham began well, and played all of the rugby in the first half, but struggled against their bigger and more physical opposition. Trentham were hit by the loss of captain Mark Griffiths during the warm up, as there injury jinx continued, but they tried to move the ball at every opportunity, with the aim of releasing their faster backs, and moving the heavy Runcorn pack around. This worked well, but all too often, the final pass went astray. Trentham should have scored a couple of tries, but were reduced to kicking for goal, with no success. Runcorn took the lead against the run of play, when they capitalised on a Trentham mistake to reach Trentham's 22. Instead of kicking for goal, they ran the ball, and crashed over from a rolling maul. The kick was missed to leave Trentham 0-7 behind at half time. Trentham were hit by a converted try early in the second half, but continued to battle against the odds, with the front row leading the charge. Trentham reduced the arrears midway through the half, when they won a scrum near the Runcorn line, and Phil Millington darted over. The kick was missed, but the chance of a come back was halted as Runcorn exploited a scrum that wheeled over 90' to score a try. As the game reached its end, Runcorn scored an identical fourth try, having wheeled a scrum over 90', before breaking and beating the cover. Runcorn managed to exploit a weak referee, and prevented Trentham from playing rugby by reducing the game into a scrappy contest, with a series of off the ball incidents. Trentham 2nd team's match was abandoned after 58 minutes, when the referee walked off the field after some comments from Stoke 3rd team players.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team beat Ellesmere Port at home 15-10 in the league on Saturday. Trentham began well, and early pressure resulted in Phil Millington kicking a penalty to give Trentham a deserved lead. Trentham continued with their early dominance, and were unlucky not to extend their lead, as a couple of penalty opportunities narrowly missed. However, every time Trentham moved the ball along the backs, they caused Ellesmere a lot of problems, with Craig Morton constantly breaking the gain line. Trentham extended their lead with a try from debutant Pat Topham mid way through the half, when a penalty attempt missed the posts, but Ellesmere made a hash of clearing their lines, and Topham picked up the loose ball and dived over. The conversion was missed, but Trentham went back on the attack. They further extended their lead, when Ben Bicknell showed good awareness near the end of the half to take a quick tapped penalty, and run in from the half way line untouched. Nick Wide added the conversion to give Trentham a 15-3 interval lead. Ellesmere, to their credit, came out with a lot of spirit in the second half, and they dominated possession as Trentham became nervous. Ellesmere refused to allow Trentham to clear their lines, and they reduced the deficit midway through the half with a converted try. Despite being put under immense pressure, Trentham responded, and they managed to reassert themselves, and relieve the pressure. Some strange refereeing decisions contrived to put Trentham back under pressure, but Trentham held on for their first win of the season. Trentham 2nd team did not play, and Trentham 3rd team lost to Stafford 4ths 5-19, whilst the Vets beat a touring side from Wales 40-20 in a game that included no kicking.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team did not play, but Trentham 2nd team beat Willenhall 2nd 13-8 at home in the merit table. Trentham should have won by more, as their faster backs continually exploited space out wide, but were guilty of trying to beat one man too many, instead of using the overlaps. Trentham took the lead midway through the first half, when Barry Shaugnessey picked up from the base of a scrum on the Willenhall 22, and drove over. Trentham were playing some excellent rugby, but Willenhall kept in the match through some good defence, and when they attacked, they used their bigger forwards to try and punch holes. Trentham held firm, and extended their lead in the second half with a Matt Standly penalty. Trentham then stood off Willenhall, and allowed their forwards to run at them, and Willenhall drew level with a try and a penalty. With time running out, Trentham responded, and after a series of surging runs by the forwards, the ball was moved quickly wide, and Laurence Dinelow scored in the corner. Alex Davies and Ben Bicknell constantly caused problems for Willenhall, while Martin Almond was devastating in defence. Trentham 3rds beat Eccleshall 1st 29-10. Chris Taylor lead from the front, and Trentham never looked in trouble. Trentham scored tries through Steve Cartlidge (3), Andrew Topham on his debut and JP Allen, whilst man of the match Neil Pickup added 2 conversions. A depleted Vets side lost away to Burntwood Vets 39-7.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team were beaten away by Dukinfield 6-18 in the S. Lancs/Cheshire Division 2. Trentham began by conceding a converted try from a line out catch and drive within the first 5 minutes, but then rallied, and some good driving play from the forwards sent Trentham deep into the Dukinfield 22, before the ball was moved wide by the backs, only for the final pass to drift forward with the line beckoning. However, Dukinfield had encroached, and Phil Millington kicked the points to put Trentham back in the game. Trentham reduced the arrears to a single point when Millington kicked his second penalty, but Dukinfield took a 10-6 half time lead after a penalty was given against Trentham, when Dukinfield prevented a quick tap free kick from being taken. Dukinfield played with the deteriorating elements in the second half, and they extended their lead with a second penalty. Trentham were fully committed and were moving the ball around, keeping it away from the Dukinfield forwards, but when the ball was spilled, Dukinfield were able to use the wind to clear the danger. Trentham's injury problems worsened when Dave Allen went off with a pulled hamstring, before Dukinfield sealed victory 10 minutes from the end, when they scored a try with a repeat catch and drive from a line out. Trentham never gave up, but were thwarted by determined defence. Trentham 2nd team were beaten away by Wolverhampton 3rds 12-26. Late cry offs meant that Trentham travelled without a full team, and they borrowed a Wolverhampton player. Trentham scored tries through Les Guest and Mick Hampton, with Carl Baker adding one conversion. The Vets beat Newcastle Vets 5-3 with a try from Martin Almond.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team were beaten at home by Hoylake 0-19 in the S. Lancs/Cheshire Division 2. Trentham began positively, and Hoylake were given no room to use their expansive game and exploit the speed of their backs. Hoylake took the lead after 10 minutes with a penalty, but Trentham pushed Hoylake back and it was only some strange penalty decisions that allowed Hoylake to clear their lines. The game was held up for 15 minutes just before half time due to a serious leg injury to one of the Hoylake players, and Trentham were caught cold on the resumption, when a missed tackle allowed the Hoylake backs to create an over lap and score an unconverted try. Hoylake sealed the game mid-way through the second half, when they kicked a penalty, before again exploiting an over lap to score their second try. A late penalty completed the scoring. Trentham 2nd team were beaten by a very good Leek 2nds 0-55 in the merit table. This game was also held up for a long time due to a serious neck injury to Carl May, Trentham's hooker. The 3rd team had an excellent 12-3 win away at Hanford 1sts. Neil Pickup and Danny Edgar scored the tries, with Paul Gnassy adding one conversion. The Vets beat Stafford 4ths 14-5 away. Andy Wright and Jeff Bailey scored a try each, and Jeff Bailey and Trevor Beech kicked a conversion each.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team were without a game this weekend, but Trentham 2nd team had an excellent 34-21 victory over Newcastle 2nds. Trentham played with an excellent spirit, and despite going 11-0 down, they put together some excellent passages of play, with forwards and backs combining well, and a mixture of close driving play, followed by expansive use of the backs. Trentham scored 6 tries in all, with Craig Morton causing all sorts of problems for the Newcastle defence, and scoring a hat-trick himself. Alex Davies continued his fine form with a try, and Brian Parker and Chris Oldacre scored the other tries. Matt Standly and Adam Slater added one conversion each. Trentham 3rds team were unlucky to lose against Market Drayton 1sts 5-8. Trentham dominated the game from the start, and they had Market Drayton under all sorts of pressure. However, Market Drayton managed to break out of their half twice in the first half, and they scored an unconverted try and a penalty. Trentham were guilty of conceding penalties, which allowed Market Drayton to clear, but they were rewarded when Nick Wiggins scored a try. Despite intense pressure on Market Drayton in the last 20 minutes, Trentham could not get the score they deserved.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team
lost 7-22 away at Crewe and Nantwich on Saturday. For the fourth week running, Trentham had a disastrous start, conceding a try inside 2 minutes when they failed to cover the kick-off properly. This gave Crewe the impetus they needed, and they used the wind to pin Trentham back in their half. Crewe extended their lead with a converted try mid way through the half, following break through the centres. Trentham did have their share of possession and when they attacked, they did look dangerous, but Crewe played the offside line well, occasionally being penalised, but getting away with it more often than not. Trentham narrowly missed the chance to reduce the arrears when a penalty from Phil Millington shaded the posts, but Crewe extended their lead just before half time when they broke through the centres, and the flanker was on hand to score under the posts. Trentham dominated the second half for long periods, and Crewe were lucky not to give away a penalty try for persistently killing the ball on their own line. However, they managed a rare break into Trentham's half, and managed to extend their lead with a penalty. Trentham rallied, and when Ben Bicknell took a close pass from the scrum, he was able to pass it back inside to James Chadwick, who beat a tackle and scored his first try for the club. Dave Allen added the extra points, before Trentham again attacked, but Crewe held firm. Mark Millington, John Hallam and Lee Fletcher all performed well in the close exchanges, whilst Richard Chell and Mark Thorndyke were exceptional in covering the ground to the breakdown. Trentham 2nd team had an excellent 31-22 victory over Crewe and Nantwich 2nds. Having gone behind early on 0-10 to 2 unconverted tries, Trentham rallied after some superb defensive work from Adam Slater. Alex Davies scored their first try, converted by Matt Standly, who then added Trentham's second try to give them the lead. Crewe took the lead with another unconverted try to lead 15-12 at half time. Craig Morton gave Trentham the lead with a try, converted by Standly, before Crewe scored a converted try. Carl Baker gave Trentham the lead when he scored a try, before Alex Davies rounded off a superb game by scoring a try, which Matt Standly converted.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team
lost 0-17 at home to Sandbach in a game that they dominated territorially. Both sides observed a minute's silence in memory of Harry Maitland, the last founder member of the club, who died on Tuesday. Trentham had a disastrous start, conceding a converted try inside 2 minutes following a knock-on and missed tackle. However, Trentham's pack began to assert some dominance, and began to win rucks and mauls. Sandbach defended superbly, and they seized every opportunity to release their young backs from deep. Another missed tackle gave Sandbach the chance to exploit an overlap, which they did, although the try was unconverted. Trentham began the second half in the same way as the first, conceding a try early on when Sandbach out-flanked the Trentham defence with a missed pass. Trentham then began to re-assert themselves, and they had long periods of play in the Sandbach 22, and camped on the try line, but Sandbach's defence continued to hold firm, and Trentham lost patience too often and either gave away penalties or scrums. Trentham 2nd team were hit by late cry-offs and unavailabilities, and succumbed to Sandbach 2nds 5-66. Richard Sharpe scored their try. The 3rd team lost heavily to Sandbach, with Mark Hale scoring their try, whilst the vets rounded off a bad day with a 17-34 loss to Sandbach. Tom Inch, Andy Wright and Jeff Bailey scored tries, with Mark Riley adding one conversion.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team
produced their best performance of the season so far despite being beaten away by Anselmians 13-30 in their S. Lancs/Cheshire Division 2 match. Trentham were still missing a couple of players through injury, and had to contend with some late cry-offs, and they were rocked when Anselmians opened up their backs to score a converted try after 2 minutes. However, Trentham rallied, and the forwards, who were dominant in the close encounters around the ruck and maul, created the platform for Richard Chell to score a try under the posts after a series of drives. Simon Rowley, who had an exceptional debut at fly half, converted to level the scores. The match was quite open, and fully committed, with defences on both sides being stretched. Trentham took the lead midway through the half when Simon Rowley landed a penalty, but Anselmians levelled with a penalty of their own. Anselmians took the lead with a converted try, before Rowley kicked his second penalty. Trentham were rocked just before half time when Anselmians scored a breakaway try to lead 22-13 at the break. Trentham responded in the second half, and the game was very even, with both sides fully committed, but Trentham were rocked by the loss of James Buckley midway through the half with a suspected dislocated shoulder. The game could have changed with 15 minutes left when Simon Rowley was stopped just short of the line, but Anselmians managed to break up field and kick a penalty to extend their lead. Anselmians managed another try with 5 minutes left after a breakaway as Trentham chased the game. Trentham's pack were superb and all deserve a mention, as well as Simon Rowley, James Buckley and Mark Griffiths in the midfield. Trentham 2nds beat Longton 3rds 17-13 in their merit table game. Trentham came from behind to win in a closely fought game. Trentham opened the scoring when Ben Bicknell collected the ball on his own 22, and beat a couple of defenders before racing the length of the field to score a try, converted by Alex Davies. Longton came back to take an 8-7 half time lead, which they extended with their second try before Rich Ellam showed his pace, out-stripping the Longton defence from the half way line for an unconverted try. Matt Standly secured the win when he broke from a maul and scored Trentham's third try. Ben Bicknell, Craig Morton, Alex Davies, Matt Standly and Chris Oldacre were all outstanding. Trentham 3rds lost 7-42 against Gnossall 1st team.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team were beaten away by Caldy in the first round of the Intermediate Cup for the second year running. Trentham were always going to be the underdogs, but were hampered even more by a number of injuries and unavailabilities, as well as a journey that took twice as long as it should have due to traffic problems. Caldy came at Trentham, and despite the difference in standard, Trentham never gave in, and were unlucky not to score a try when they had Caldy on the rack in the second half. Oliver Slater played well in his first outing as open side for the first team, and Steve Dono disrupted the Caldy line-out on numerous occasions. The front row more than held their own whilst in the backs, James Chadwick sniped from the base of the scrum, and Laurence Dinelow put in some impressive tackles. Trentham 2nds were denied a victory by a last minute try as they drew with Macclesfield 4ths 12-12. Simon Rowley scored both tries, converting one in a very impressive debut for the club. The 3rd team were beaten away at Burntwood, whilst the Vets lost to Newcastle 3rds 9-22. Paul Horton scored 2 penalties and a drop goal.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team were beaten at home by St. Edwards OB in their S.Lancs/Cheshire Division 2 game 0-22. Trentham were hit by 2 tries in 2 minutes midway through the second half, after being the better side up to that point. Playing up the slope in the first half, Trentham were unlucky to go in 0-3 down, after a late penalty from St. Edwards, as they took the game to the visitors and threatened their line. Phil Millington hit the post with a penalty, and the forwards were putting the St. Edwards forwards under a lot of pressure. St. Edwards always looked dangerous when they counter-attacked, and their backs were sharp and well drilled. Trentham picked up in the second half where they had left off, and had St. Edwards pinned back for long passages of play, before the game turned. St. Edwards scored their first try when Trentham looked to exploit an overlap, but the pass was intercepted. Despite Trentham's defence getting back, St. Edwards were able to crash over and convert the try. From the kick off, St. Edwards recycled quick ball, and a missed tackle allowed them to score under the posts for a second converted try. Trentham tried to respond, but they lost their shape as they tried to run everything, and St. Edwards capitalised with a third try. Trentham 2nds lost at home to Tamworth 17-22 in the Merit Table. They scored tries through Carl Baker, Martin Ormond and Craig Morton, playing his first game for the club. Carl Baker added one conversion. The Vets lost to Hanford 1st team 12-20 in a merit table game. They scored tries through Andy Smith and Paul Horton, who added one conversion.

Trentham Rugby Club 1st team
were beaten away at Bowdon in their S.Lancs/Cheshire Division 2 game 7-18. Trentham were below par for much of the match, and paid for their subdued performance. Bowdon took the game to Trentham in the early stages, and took a 6-0 half time lead after 2 penalties, as Trentham were penalised for holding the ball in the tackle and encroaching offside at rucks and mauls. Trentham began to show a bit more spirit just before half time as they won some quick ball and moved play wide. Bowdon came back at Trentham at the start of the second half, and following a poor clearance kick, Bowdon switched play across the pitch and scored an unconverted try in the corner. Trentham began to play their best rugby of the afternoon, and Finlay Burke scored a try under the posts midway through the half, converted by Dave Allen. Trentham were beginning to cause problems for the Bowdon pack, winning ball against the head, and with the forwards driving into rucks and mauls, and Bowdon could have been penalised for persistent offending near their line. However, Trentham lost composure too frequently, and Bowdon cleared. Bowdon sealed the game late on, when they went blind from a scrum on the Trentham 22, and scored a converted try to give the final score-line a flattering look. Trentham 2nds lost away to Lichfield 3rds 30-14 in the Merit Table. They scored tries through Chris Meeson and Carl Baker. Chris Meeson converted both tries. Johnny McNamara, Matt Standly, Chris Oldacre, Alex Davies and Pat Topham all played well, in a game that was held up for 30 minutes due to a serious injury to a Lichfield player. The Vets lost to a younger, faster Chester Vets side 10-53. They scored tries through Andy Wright and Connell Cunningham.

The plate final was a much closer affair, with Trentham A beating Leek A 24-22. Trentham had taken the lead with tries from Nick Wide and Alex Davies, in his first competition for the hosts, before Leek reduced the arrears before half time with a converted try. Trentham extended their lead to 24-7 when James Chadwick, another debutant, went the length of the field to score and Mark Griffiths scored the last try, both converted, before Leek stormed back. They scored 2 unconverted tries, and when Trentham failed to put the ball into touch, Leek ran in another try, only for the conversion under the posts to be missed.
